Safeguarding & Child Protection

Safeguarding means keeping everyone safe from harm such as abuse, bullying, discrimination, hate crimes or harassment.

We acknowledge that in a complex special school environment where many students require regular adult support and interventions to stay safe that this can be particularly challenging.

Therefore we have a robust and varied team of trained staff to support as Designated Senior Leaders (DSLs) for Safeguarding.

If you have any non-urgent safeguarding concerns about a child who attends Millgate School please contact Amanda Tory on 0116 270 4922.

If you believe a child is at risk of significant harm please contact the Police on 111 or Children’s Social Care Duty and Advice Service on 0116 4541004.

Prevent

In order for schools to fulfil the governments Prevent duty, it is essential that staff are able to identify children who may be vulnerable to radicalisation, and know what to do when they are identified. Millgate School builds up pupils’ resilience to radicalisation by promoting fundamental British values and enabling them to challenge extremist views by exploring this appropriately as part of the curriculum. It is important to emphasise that the Prevent duty is not intended to stop pupils debating controversial issues.

Operation Encompass (Supporting children and young people exposed to domestic abuse)

Operation Encompass is a unique Police and Education early intervention safeguarding partnership which supports children and young people exposed to domestic abuse.

Operation Encompass is the reporting to schools before the start of the next school day when a child or young person has been involved or exposed to a domestic abuse incident the previous evening.

The information is given in strict confidence to a school’s Key Adult to enable support to be given dependent on the needs and wishes of the child.
